I have seen someone get on a scooter while the double leg kickstand was still down. They got on without taking up the kickstand, started the scooter, and rocked the scooter til the back tire got good enough contact with the ground to go forward when they twisted the throttle. The bike rolled forward of course, and this forced the kickstand to retract.
Is this the proper way to take off? Also, if not, will it harm the scooter, the kickstand, or any other components?
Bill…I took a safety course. It was for motorcycles, not a scooter in the bunch. Also, not one of the cycles had this type of kickstand on it.
Mind your manners, okay?
pie eater…not one of the cycles in the safety course had that type of kickstand. But this is a small city, and there were only 5 of us in the course that month.

Not safe! Riding without the kickstand fully retracted can lead to disaster of it snags on something. The proper way to retract the centre stand:
1. Hold the rear brake lever.
2. Rock forward.
3. Release the brake and slowly push the bike forward until the stand retracts.
My final check before riding of is to kick the stand backwards to make sure it’s fully retracted because springs can sometimes fail.

will its not a whole lot defiant then the right way to do it. the right way is to hold on to the back of the seat Handel and Handel bar and roll it foreword or both hands on the Handel bars and roll it foreword it springs up all by its self. is what you seen that guy do is almost the same thing but the prob with that is if it Du’s not go all the way up and you do not know it’ it can catch on something and throw you off this happens. the guy is a hot-dog. ha ha. you know what i mean. he he.

While you can start off that way it is never safe to try to take any bike off the center stand while seated on it. I had a Honda CB650 and it had a center stand as do many regular bikes. I also own a Suzuki Burgman with a center stand. I always take the bike off that stand by standing beside it, grasping my handlebars with my left hand and my rear handles with my right. I push it forward until it rolls off the stand. I then use the left brake lever to stop and secure the bike while I mount the seat. Never had a problem with either bike doing it that way.

Always put a scooter on the center stand to start it. A cold scooter engine initially idles at a higher RPM, which can possibly engage the rear drive clutch, move it forward, and tip it over IF ONLY THE SIDE STAND IS EXTENDED (some have electrical interlocks to prevent this).
The center stand retraction method is a matter of personal preference. Many “push off” while standing up over the seat.
