Kevin K asked: I have 49cc TGB Lazer Scooter. I recently had a performance upgrade installed so that it would go 5 to 8 mile faster. Before getting the upgrade, my scooter never had a problem and only had 2700 miles on it. A day after I got the scooter back a piston broke off into the head gasket and pretty much destroyed the motor. Now I have to get the motor rebuilt or replaced. The scooter shop that did the upgrade said the upgrade had nothing to do with the piston issue.
Is this correct? If it’s a 49cc that should only go about 40-45MPH but now goes 45-55 MPH, could that have caused the issue?
They installed a new exhaust system that helps it to move a bit faster. As far as what was done internally, I’m not really sure.

What is your budget? Why not consider getting a motorcycle 250cc and up? It will have much better pick up and handling.

I know several people with 49cc scooters that were modded to go 60 and 70+MPH… they have no problems.

Leave it lay, period. Move on to a 250 Ninja.

We need to know what they did to increase the performance. My hunch is that they were at least partially responsible for the catastrophic engine failure, but without more info it’s just a guess!
I’m with the others though. If you’re looking for a 55 mph scooter, you should move up in displacement, rather than straining a 50cc. I’m partial to 250cc scooters personally.

I had a similar problem, I found the guy who claimed “he knew what he was doing” didn’t has a clue. I’m doing everything myself, porting the carb, re-working the air box. The best and easiest results I got was butting on different exhaust and adjusting the air flow..
