A mobility scooter can be of great benefit to anyone who suffers from arthritis or circulation problems as well as other medical complaints. Mobility scooters are very easy to use, and shouldn’t be daunting. Despite all the various models and types to choose from, they all work in similar ways. The main differences are the number of wheels (three or four), the maximum speed, and the size of the disabled scooter.
Three wheel electric scooters are ideal for using indoors, especially in the home or in a shop, as they have a smaller turning circle than the equivalent four wheel model, which makes them easy to manoeuvre. Four wheel disabled scooters were previously perceived to be more stable but, due to technological advances, there is very little difference in stability between three and four wheel scooters these days. Most mobility scooter manufacturers offer three and four wheel versions of the same model.
What the disabled scooter is going to be used for, and how often it is going to be used, will help to determine which model will be best. For example, somebody purchasing a mobility scooter which will be used daily to replace a car has different needs to someone purchasing a mobility scooter that will be carried in the car and used primarily at weekends for travelling short distances.
Mobility scooter batteries are rechargeable and depending on the model of scooter, and will allow the mobility scooter to travel in excess of 30 miles. The smaller boot scooters have a range of around 10-15 miles depending on the model. The batteries can sometimes be upgraded to provide better performance, or an additional battery pack can be carried on the scooter to effectively double the range of the electric scooter.
Mobility scooters normally require a key to start them and are immobile without the key. This allows the electric scooter can be left outside a shop or house safely and securely, and prevents unauthorised use. Disabled scooters have a freewheel mode, which allows the scooter to be moved, without the scooter being turned on. This makes storing and transporting your electric scooter easier, and can assist when the batteries are charging and it needs moving.
Disabled scooters are steered using the tiller which is similar to a bicycle or motorbike handlebar. The tiller is usually adjustable, depending on the model, and can often be dropped down for transportation. Mobility scooters are driven using the thumb or fingers pushing or pulling a lever. This control is called a “wig wag” and works on the “see saw” principle. If the forward lever is pushed, it is the same as pulling on the reverse lever, and vice versa. Some models are driven by pushing the lever with the thumb, whilst others are driven by pulling the lever with the fingers, like a bicycle brake. A Delta handlebar means that both forward and reverse can be controlled using the same hand. This is fitted as standard on some disabled scooter models and available as an optional extra on others.
The speed of the mobility scooter is determined by the amount of pressure put on the forward / reverse lever. The overall speed of the disabled scooter is governed by the speed dial on the control panel. When getting used to the electric scooter, it may be better to use a lower speed setting. On the road legal mobility scooters, there is usually a switch which lowers the maximum speed from 8mph to 4mph, which then allows the scooter to be used legally on a pavement.
In order to slow down, the user just needs to release the forward or reverse lever which then brings the mobility scooter to a stop. Disabled scooters have regenerative brakes fitted, which mean that the scooter can be left on a slope with out fear of it rolling away. An emergency bicycle style brake is fitted to some models for additional safety and security.
Class 3, 8mph mobility scooters are road legal, and so can travel on the highway. By law, these have to be fitted with full lights and indicators. This type of electric scooter is larger and more luxurious than those designed to be dismantled and transported in a car boot. These disabled scooters are often purchased to replace a car, and so are much more powerful, and more rugged than a boot scooter. These disabled scooters usually have an adjustable and removable seat. The more luxurious seats recline and slide and some even have a headrest, like a car seat. Depending on the model of electric scooter, the seat may be upgraded to a larger, more comfortable more supportive seat.
Boot scooters are very popular and are designed to be transported, and can be taken apart in a matter of seconds. The seat and battery pack are easy to remove, and sometimes the scooter chassis will separate into two parts. Depending on the model of mobility scooter, the components may have handles incorporated into them to make putting them into a car boot even easier. Some models of small disabled scooter separate without the need to disconnect plugs or cables which makes transporting the electric scooter even easier.
These smaller mobility scooters, or boot scooters, are usually less luxurious than the larger electric scooters, and often do not have the same sort of features such as pneumatic tyres, full suspension or a highly adjustable seat. The maximum range that the scooter can travel is usually less, as is the weight capacity. Small mobility scooters
Another option is the pavement mobility scooter, which is a compromise between the boot scooter and the road legal scooter. These models of disabled scooter usually have some of the features of the larger scooters, such as lights and indicators, suspension, and a comfier seat than a boot scooter, but can usually still be dismantled for transportation. Some models have a top speed of 6mph, rather than the usual boot scooter top speed of 4mph.
A mobility scooter can bring back, or help to maintain independence, and allow long and short journeys to be enjoyed in both comfort and style.

Many scooters can be disassembled into three pieces, each piece generally weighing 15 – 34 pounds.
Strength

If you have severe mobility issues than making sure your mobility chair swivels for easy exit or entry would be important you. But if you only use your mobility scooter occasionally and sit in it rarely then a standard scooter seat will be just fine.
Arm types
If you ride in your scooter a lot and are constantly getting in & out of it then having adjustable arms is big. Imagine having to move around your scooter’s arms every time you exit and enter it. After buying you custom painting manual guide, tools, paint and equipments, the next job is to dismantle the scooter. First start dismantling your scooter with utmost accuracy. While dismantling the scooter, you should be very careful with wires attached to the scooter.
Dismantling scooter is not very difficult, if you do it according to the custom painting manual guide. Remove only those parts from scooter, which you want to re-paint, as most of the people remove each and every part from the scooter and find it difficult to assemble it later.
You should remember while dismantling your scooter, that you have to assemble it. By using the basic tools kit, you can easily dismantle or assemble your scooter. You should collect all the big or small parts of your scooter very carefully at the time of dismantling your scooter.
Sanding.
Sanding is done to remove the old paint from the dismantled parts of scooter and to give smooth and silky surface to paint. The process of sanding is done by using sand papers. Generally, there are two types of sand paper used in sanding process of scooters, first is rough sandpaper and second is fine sandpaper. Rough sandpaper is used to remove the old paint from the scooter and fine sandpaper is used to give smooth surface for the new paint.
If the old paint is remain on the scooter then it might cause problem with the new paint. Therefore, sanding is very important before you start painting your scooter. Never try to avoid sanding because it is very important for the long lasting shine and grace of new paint.
Sanding your scooter.
Sanding a scooter doesn’t need any specialized knowledge or skill. You must be careful while choosing the correct thickness of the sand paper (rough sandpaper and fine sandpaper).
Sand papers with grit form 600 to 1000 can be used, depending upon the roughness of your scooter. 600 grit sand papers are used for the rough surface i.e. to remove the old paint. 1000 grit sand papers are used for fine finishing of the scooter.
Although sanding is not a specialized job, but you have to be expert in judging the smoothness of the surface on which you are going to paint. When you are going for scooter sanding, you should be well prepared, as the people who perform such jobs are regularly exposed to dust (powder of old paint). Chances of getting dust in the eye and throat are very common.
Therefore, your must wear the safety equipments. Swallowing these powders sometimes might leads to lung cancer.
For the final finishing of your scooter, it is recommended to use 200 grit sanding paper. Smooth and sparkling surface of the scooter is the reward of proper sanding. Use 1200 grit wet and dry sand paper if you want to paint a metallic color on your scooter.
Chemical stripper for sanding.
If you find it difficult to remove the old paint of your scooter with a sand paper, then you can also use chemical stripper. Apply the paint stripper very carefully all over the scooter with a paint brush.
Chemical stripper can affect your skin badly. Therefore, you must wear safety equipments while applying chemical stripper on your scooter.
How to apply chemical stripper.
You should cover all the parts of your scooter, which you want to paint, with clear plastic sheet (available from any hardware shop), so the vapors will be trapped inside and will work more rapidly on the scooter. After covering the scooter parts with the plastic sheet, than wait for the 2 to 3 hours and remove the plastic sheet.
Now you can start to scrape off the old paint from the scooter with a putty knife or a paint scraper. After applying stripping chemical on the scooter parts and keep the water away from these parts. If necessary, use the stripping chemical again.
Never use the chemical stripper to remove the old paint from the scooter part, as it can affect the body (metal) of your scooter. Therefore, sanding by sand paper is the best and simple way to remove old paint from scooter.
Wash the parts before you start painting.
After the sanding process, wash each and every part. Washing is necessary and important to remove the sanding powder which is left after the sanding process.
There are some people who jump from sanding directly on to the base coat and might suffer later, as if you start with base coating without washing it, then after completing the first base coat, you will find small particles on it. Therefore, wash gently all the parts before you start painting.
For washing purpose, you can use any common soap or dishwashing detergents which are commonly available in the market. You can also use a scrub or a hard brush with these soap or detergent. A scrub or a hard brush will also remove the old paint left during the sanding process.
You can also use cleaner to wash scooter, but never use any strong and chemically reacting cleaner which can damage the body (metal) of your scooter by starting the rusting process. These types of chemical cleaners contain a chemical irritant which is known as Ethylene Glycol Monobutyl Ether.
Therefore, it is recommended to use common soap or dishwashing detergent to wash your scooter before painting.

I would like to buy a scooter. I know nothing about them. What is the best scooter for the money? If you take them to the grocery store, how do you keep people from stealing them? They look like you could just pick them up and carry them away. Are they hard to drive? Would a motorcycle be a better buy than a scooter?
